Peru Mission 2008
Seventeen men, women, and children traveled from Southern Pines to Peru in
late February. This was the fifth mission trip sponsored by our church to the
Iglesia Metodista del Peru -Jose Olaya, located in a shanty town about an hour
outside of Lima.
While there, we sanded, primed, sealed, and painted the walls of the sanctuary,
mezzanine, parsonage, and classrooms. A 3 day free medical clinic was also held
with approximately 700 patients seen! This was a record number. On Sunday, March
2, during a joyous worship service, the newly completed sanctuary was consecrated
by Jorge Bravo, resident bishop of the Peru Annual Conference. We presented a
plaque commemorating the consecration along with a check for $2100 for furnishings.
Once again, our congregation supported this important outreach ministry by
their generous financial contributions and donations of personal hygiene supplies
that were distributed during the clinic. A grant was also given by the North Carolina
Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Team members included: Michelle Aubrey, Don Bryant, Sandy Bryant, Abby Davis,
Sherry Driscoll, Jennifer German, John German, Andrew Harmody, Matt Harmody, Matthew
Harmody, Susan Harmody, Amy Natt, Ted Natt, Garrett Pugh, Laura "TJ"
Tremper-Jones, Matt White, and Debbie Whitley.
We give God the glory and praise for the work that we have been privileged
to complete and the wonderful memories that we have of the gentle, loving people
of Jose Olaya.
Peru Mission 2007 Report and Photos
Twelve persons from our congregation, the Moore County Health Department, and
the Moore Free Care Clinic traveled to Peru in February. This was the fourth mission
trip sponsored by our church to the Iglesia Metodista del Peru -Jose Olaya, located
in a shanty town on the outskirts of Lima. Previous mission teams worked on the
church's education building which is now being used for Sunday School classes.
In 2007, team members continued work on the new sanctuary. Rebar was cut and
tied and concrete was poured for the second floor of the building. A three-day
free medical clinic was held for a record number of 623 patients! Team members
also led a Sunday afternoon children's activity for boys and girls, ages 3-16.
Once again, our congregation generously supported this important outreach ministry
by making cash contributions and donating personal hygiene supplies for health
kits that were distributed during the clinic. A generous grant was also given
by the North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
2007 Team members included: Michelle Aubrey, Don Bryant, Sandy Bryant, Susan
Craven, Sherry Driscoll, Jennifer German, John German, The Rev. David Goehring,
Matt Harmody, Ted Natt, Gail Scott, and Debbie Whitley.
