The Sanctuary Stained Glass Windows

The Balcony Windows

There are eleven balcony windows that measure approximately 2'-0" x 3'-6" and are rectangular shape. Eleven windows side by side with six inches of wall space between each window. The windows face West and are relatively high from the Sanctuary floor but level with the balcony seating. An amber border at the top and bottom only of each panel was employed to help tie the eleven windows together. The color scheme remains the same in each window which adds to the continuity. The circular suggestion in each panel maintains the "Rose" window motif dictated by the large diamond shape window on the East wall.

The Balcony series reads from left to right and depict in symbol stories of the Old and New Testament beginning with Creation. Please click on each photo to view a larger picture.

The first panel illustrates the creation of the Heavens and the Earth.

The second panel continues the creation story with the Temptation of Adam and Eve. This second panel shows the apple surrounded by the serpent.

The third panel is the event of Noah and the Ark. The Ark is shown on the waters surrounded by the rainbow that represents the promise of God. The dove hovers above the Ark.

The fourth panel is the parting of the Red Sea by Moses. The sandals representthe order by God to Moses to remove his sandals because he was standing on holy ground in the presence of the Burning Bush. The area directly above the sandals represents the Manna from Heaven.

The fifth panel is the Ten Commandments, the law given by God to the Israelites.

The sixth panel in the Balcony series begins the stories of the New Testamentwith the sheep, shepherds crook and star. This panel represents the Nativity of Jesus.

The seventh panel depicts the ministry of Christ. Here we see the Cross and two fish. The cross symbolizes the Crucifixion and the fish (Icthus in Greek) symbolize the early believers. The symbol of the fish was used by Christians to recognize each other during times of persecution. Early Christians used the symbol of the fish to indicate that they were followers of Jesus Christ.

The eighth panel is the Last Supper or Holy Communion.

Panel number nine represents the Passion of Christ. The Cross upon whichChrist was crucified is encircled by the Crown of Thorns that was placed upon Christ's head. The spear that was plunged into Christ's side and the sign placed above the Cross announces that here is "Jesus, King of the Jews".

The tenth panel illustrates the Easter Lily. The Lily is the most familiar symbol for the Resurrection. The seemingly lifeless bulb dies in the ground and produces a beautiful bloom at Easter time symbolizing life emerging out of death.

The final and eleventh panel in the series is the Dove. This Dove represents the Holy Spirit crowned with a Holy Trinity nimbus. The Dove is the most common representation of the Holy Spirit. The basis for this symbol originates in the story of the Baptism of Christ.
