Lectionary Readings
At Southern Pines United Methodist Church we follow what is known as the Revised
Common Lectionary: a schedule or system of scripture readings for worship services
that is used by Christians around the world.
Following the lectionary is one way of manifesting the extraordinary transnational
unity made possible in Christ. When we gather on Sundays and hear the scriptures
read, we are listening to the same Word proclaimed that very day to millions of
other Christians in scores of other languages!
The lectionary has its roots in the ancient tradition of reading scriptures
in synogogue gatherings. The Revised Common Lectionary is organized around
a three-year cycle, with scriptural texts assigned for each Sunday according to
the particular liturgical season (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week,
Easter, or the Season after Pentecost, also known as Ordinary Time).
For this week's lectionary readings, please visit the Worship page of the General
Board of Discipleship website.
