Tommy and his wife, Susan, came to Southern Pines in June, 2008 from Rosemary UMC in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., where Tommy served nine years. In addition to Rosemary UMC, Tommy has served: Littleton UMC, Hatteras Charge UMC, Edenton UMC, and First UMC Siler City.  Tommy enjoys music, the outdoors, and any opportunity he gets to ride his motorcycle.

Tommy's wife, Susan, is a registered nurse and works at FirstHealth of the Carolinas Moore Regional Hospital.  They have six children together and seven grandchildren: Brandon of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Laura Grace and Katie of Providence, RI; Joshua and his wife, Natalie, and granddaughters Emma Kate and Laura of Winterville, NC; Meredith and her husband, John Slazas, and grandsons John Hanes and Jackson of Cameron, NC; Alice Hope and her husband, PO3 Kevin Spragins, and granddaughters Julianne and Lynnley of Camden, NC; and Lee of Durham, NC.

As our Senior Pastor, Tommy seeks to help our congregation define and live into a bold vision for ministry. As we seek to fulfill our mission, “To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ by connecting people to God, to others and to the world.” Our belief is that God has empowered us to fling open our doors to serve our community and God’s world.  As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are sent out to live by faith, to be known by love and to be a light of hope!

Come join us for fellowship and praise! Chancel Choir provides music primarily for the late service, yet also sings at the early service on occasion throughout the year. Beyond providing music for weekly services, the choir enjoys singing for assisted living communities at different points throughout the year and is richly connected with a variety of other aspects of our church life.

Chancel Choir also looks forward to producing the annual Advent Cantata with Orchestra and providing opportunities for all interested members to participate in smaller ensemble settings. With so many new projects unfolding we hope that you will get involved and Come and See Us!

The Chancel Choir provides music on a weekly basis for the 11:00 AM traditional service, monthly at the early service, and special services throughout the year. All members and guests, from high school students to retired adults, are welcome.

Dear Church Family,
While we have avoided strict mandates during the ever evolving COVID response, it has been our practice to encourage Church Members to follow North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services guidance with respect to masking. Consistent with recent announcements and plans for schools and local government buildings, the wearing of a mask is now optional (individual choice) at Southern Pines United Methodist Church.  As in all matters, we are respectful of individual choice and appreciate that those who choose not to wear masks will continue to be mindful of those who decide to remain masked.  We have been through a challenging period, but are optimistic about current COVID trends and look forward to more robust in-person interaction moving forward.

"In Christ all things hold together."   Colossians 1:17

Can you imagine what Paul’s life was like when he wrote his last letter? He was in a prison in Rome— a real prison, not just under house arrest. The Roman Empire had begun to openly persecute Christians believers. Paul was a target. Some Believers were afraid to associate with him or help him because they, and their families, would also be targeted by the Roman government. It was a dangerous time to profess faith in Christ. The world was in upheaval, to say the least.

But within all this chaos, Paul managed to write a letter, his last letter, to Timothy to encourage him to carry on. The letter is full of encouragement, love and instruction. It also carries a sense of warning. Paul wrote this letter to give final instructions for Timothy so he could carry on the good work of faith.

This ancient letter contains so much wisdom for us today. Join us as we explore 2 Timothy. Our Bible study group spans many churches and generations. Invite a friend! Bring your favorite Bible!

Virtual Choir

COVID hasn't stopped the Chancel Choir, Women's Choir, Praise Band, or even the Handbell Choir! You've seen all of their virtual videos during worship and if you haven't click to check out their videos on the new SoPines UMC Music Ministry YouTube channel!

Now we want to do a video that includes everyone in the church singing "Amazing Grace My Chains Are Gone." This song is an excellent blend of both traditional and contemporary Christian music. Whether you are a shower-singer, a bell ringer, an opera star, or anywhere in between, we'd love for you to lend your voice!

~ 2 Corinthians 9:2

How-To Record &Upload:

Step One: Download the PDF & Guide Track
You can use the file that contains just the lyrics or if you prefer to use the sheet music.

Also, download the "Listening Guide Track" and listen a few times to get comfortable with the song. You will also listen to the "Guide Track" when recording through headphones so it will be playing in your recorded video.

When each link opens there is a download icon (downward arrow)

in the upper left of the screen. Click to download each file to your

laptop or preferred device

Step Two: Record yourself singing (or get someone to record):
You will need 2 devices:

  • Device #1 will play the guide track through your headphones so it doesn't get recorded in your video & creates an echo.
  • Device #2 will record/film.

Feel free to record yourself OR get your spouse to join you OR get the whole family in the video.

The more, the merrier!

Tips:

  • Listen to the "Listening Guide Track" a few times to get comfortable with the song. You may want to do a practice run (or two) before you record.
  • Allow the guide track to aid lead you in your musical expressions!
  • Use the headphones for device #1 (guide track playback) when you record.
  • Record in a quiet place with no dogs barking, no AC on, no dishwasher running, etc.
  • Please record yourself through the whole song.
  • Mobile devices (phones and tablets) have better internal mics for recording rather than computers

Step Three: Send In Your Video
There are 3 options for submitting your video:

  • Text the video to David Smith (919) 265-8750
  • E-mail the video to David Smith
  • Upload your video

All videos are due by Sunday, Oct. 18th.

Okay, now let's sing!

PS - If you want to record but aren't sure how to do this don't worry. Please contact David Smith, we have someone that will come to you and help record OR you can set up a time to meet Alan Daubenspeck at church to record yourself.

27-March

Our adult musical groups include Chancel Choir, Praise Band, Mixed Ensemble, Men's Ensemble, Women's Esemble and Handbells. Upon request, we are always eager to create new opportunities for ensembles and solo work for vocalists and instrumentalists.

So, whether you have a 5 year old child or you are 91 yourself, please consider coming by and making music with us. No experience is needed; only a joy of serving our church in a music community where laughter and love are equally important as the music we make.  Thank you for visiting our webpage.
